Work Package 6, Qualitative data gathering, took place from July 2011 through February 2012 and was coordinated by UA (Belgium).
This work package concerned gathering in-depth information on how perceptions on human rights and democracy are formed, and the role they play in migration aspirations and decision-making. Special attention was given to the constitutive role of gender in these processes. Qualitative data gathering is necessary for understanding perceptions, imaginations, motivational and behavioral processes. In addition, this part of the fieldwork provided answers to unanswered / new questions emerging from the survey.
In each country the GDT’s, in collaboration with UA, took crucial steps for qualitative fieldwork preparation, such as: 1) Training the local researchers who were involved in the qualitative data collection in interview techniques/observation. 2) Deciding on the profile and number of respondents needed for in-depth interviews (stratified sub sample of the survey respondents - max. 20 per region; max. 80 per country), paying attention to the gender balance. 3) Choosing specific scenarios for observation.
The qualitative fieldwork was conducted by the GDT’s, with UA taking up final responsibility for the coordination of: 1) The transcription of in-depth interviews and observation material, and its translation into English or French; 2) The first qualitative data analysis; 3) The creation of qualitative databases per country, and ; 4 The descriptive analyses.
Project Paper 8 Descriptive qualitative data report was published on the project website in 2012.
The embargo of 36 months on the qualitative datasets was lifted in October 2015; the data are now accessible in NVivo format by the public.
