The 4th Work Package concerns the Methodological elaboration. It is coordinated by PRIO (Norway) and runs from June 2010 until June 2011.
The aim for this work package is to develop research guidelines for the various parts of the fieldwork, as well as concrete instruments to be implemented,: such as the questionnaire and qualitative data collection tools. Considering the multidisciplinary nature of the project – bringing together ideas and methods from human geography, political science, sociology, anthropology and psychology – detailed guidelines and recommendations for the various methods will be provided. The research methodologies for both the quantitative survey and the qualitative fieldwork (in-depth-interviews, observation and triangulation) will be specified and elaborated.
The 1st sub-coordinator of WP4, IMI (U.K.) is responsible for the quantitative data gathering preparation. As such, IMI will coordinate the development of the questionnaire on the basis of the country reports and its translation into the most important languages of the four countries. The questionnaire development process includes a pre-testing phase among men and women respondents, subsequent revisions of the questionnaire, and a cross-validation. IMI will also construct a database for data entry.
The qualitative data gathering will be coordinated by the 2nd sub coordinator of WP4, UA (Belgium). UA will develop an interview topic list on the basis of the first data analyses of the survey, and coordinate its translation into the most important languages of the four countries. UA will equally ensure the preparation for the observation (specific locations, activities that will be observed, etc.), design a questionnaire for interviewing staff in embassies and migrant supporting organizations, and decide on analytical tools for qualitative data analysis.
The final questionnaire, translated into the most important languages of the four countries, will be ready in 2010, together with project paper 6A: Questionnaire and guidelines for quantitative fieldwork. The Interview topic list (translated into the most important languages of the four countries), the scenario for the observation, the questionnaire for interviewing staff in embassies and migrant supporting organizations, together with project paper 6B Instruments/guidelines qualitative data collection, will be ready in 2011.
